South Buffalo was once home to eight Catholic grammar schools: St. Agatha’s, St. Ambrose, St. Bonaventure, Holy Family, St. John the Evangelist, St. Martin of Tours, St. Teresa’s, and St. Thomas Aquinas. Growing up, our parishes and schools were significant sources of pride. For many of us, they still are. Our Catholic school experience was an enormous aspect of our childhood; it provided us with a quality education, a strong foundation in faith, and lifelong friends.
Unfortunately, much has changed since those days. After several consolidations, Notre Dame Academy (NDA) is now the only Catholic elementary school in South Buffalo, serving the academic needs of children from those eight parishes and beyond. It is the largest elementary school in the Diocese of Buffalo, educating more than 500 students in Pre-K 3 through 8th grade, across two campuses. Despite this, it receives no funding from the diocese.
In an effort to secure the future of Catholic education in our community, we, the alumni of the South Buffalo Catholic Grammar Schools, are organizing to provide meaningful support to Notre Dame.
