Math

6th Grade Mathematics

In 6th grade students are learning Pre-Algebra concepts focusing on the NY State Mathematics Learning Standards. Within these learning standards, there are (5) major Crosswalks that are taught throughout the year. We focus on: 1) Ratios and Proportional Reasoning, 2) The Number System, 3) Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities, 4) Geometry – Area and Volume and 5) Statistics and Probability. 6th grade mathematics builds on student understanding of decimals and fractions, while introducing newer algebraic concepts such as writing expressions, solving equations, graphing using a number line and coordinate plane, determining percentages, as well as gathering and analyzing statistics to determine the Mean, Median, Mode, Range, and Outlier. These concepts are taught and implemented throughout the year using the Math Modules, Eureka Math, and IXL to improve student understanding.

7th Grade Mathematics

In 7th grade students are learning Pre-Algebra concepts focusing on the NY State Mathematics Learning Standards. Within these learning standards, there are (5) major Crosswalks that are taught throughout the year. These concepts are similar to the 6th grade Crosswalks and are built upon prior knowledge and understanding. We focus on 1) Ratio and Proportional Reasoning, 2) The Number System, 3) Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities, 4) Geometry – Area, Volume, Missing Angles, Scale Drawing and 5) Statistics and Probability. In 7th grade there is a shift from 6th grade in students using integers (positive and negative numbers) to solve equations, using absolute value to solve word problems, learning how to determine percent on and percent off, and using statistics to determine the probability of events and number of possible outcomes. These concepts and taught and implemented throughout the year using the Math Modules, Eureka Math, and IXL to improve student understanding.

8th Grade Mathematics

In 8th grade students are learning Pre-Algebra concepts focusing on the NY State Mathematics Learning Standards. Within these learning standards there are (5) major Crosswalks that are taught throughout the year. While the Crosswalks are somewhat similar to those in 6th and 7th grade math, there is much more emphasis and focus on Algebraic and Geometric Concepts. We focus on: 1) The Number System, 2) Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities, 3) Functions 4) Geometry – Volume of 3 Dimensional Figures, Transformations and the Pythagorean Theorem, and 5) Statistics and Probability focusing on patterns of association in bivariate data. In 8th grade students also focus on Laws of Exponents, Linear and Nonlinear Equations and Graphs focusing on the Slope and Y-Intercept. These concepts are taught and implemented throughout the year using the Math Modules, Eureka Math, and IXL to improve student understanding.
